Jim Tait, the maker of waves, was born at Baltasound, Shetland, in 1948. His native islands stand among the rich fishing grounds where the North Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, and this has reflected in his lifelong interest in the sea, and his development as a seascape artist. Although he attended art college upon leaving school, he has spent most of his life in administrative work, with painting as a profitable hobby. Only in 2002, after a period of unemployment, did he decide to become a full-time professional artist.
"The sea has always been my interest and my love. Bright, calm and inviting or dark, brooding and stormy, I am devoted to depicting it in all its moods. I have become a maker of waves."
